“New music should be fun!”
says Konstantia Gourzi. “The plus gives us the chance to portray it in new ways.” This is the message at the heart of the education project ‘opus21musikplus live in primary schools’. It is kindly supported by the Ernst von Siemens Stiftung, Stiftung Deutsche Pfandbriefbank, GlaxoSmithKline GmbH & Co, Christoph und Stephan Kaske-Stiftung, Kulturreferat München, Bayerisches Kultusministerium – Kulturfonds, and the Paul Strecker-Stiftung.
Konstantia Gourzi’s vision is to have children experience new music directly, as part of their normal school environment. Guided by Konstantia and the opus21musikplus musicians, they can access new music in natural ways, with their hearts, hands and understanding.
The children paint and do craft in response to the music. They grasp the music, when the instrumentalists visit their classrooms and make music together with them. Every activity prioritises children’s natural desire for music.
This phenomenon is seen in every culture: children dance and sing to songs with primal enthusiasm. Music and dance belong together, and captivate everyone, like a universal language. As a whole, our education project refigures melody, rhythm, structure, dynamics and musical expression in diverse forms, colours and movements. The physical training develops the children’s creativity, and also has a positive effect on social behaviour.
